Blubrry statistics vs Backtracks: only one is live

Blubrry statistics vs Backtracks is not a live comparison. Backtracks states on its own site that the platform is no longer available, so Blubrry is the only one of the two you can actually buy. The real question is whether Blubrry covers what you were using Backtracks for, and for a lot of former Backtracks users the honest answer is partly.
Blubrry is a hosting company that also sells measurement as a standalone layer, carrying an IAB certification, working on shows hosted elsewhere through a prefix, and starting at no cost.

What Blubrry statistics actually reports
The certified download is the headline, and it is the number that travels.
Blubrry's podcast statistics page states its stats are IAB v2.1 certified compliant by the Interactive Advertising Bureau Tech Lab for podcast measurement compliance. That matters commercially rather than technically: a buyer who sees a certified figure does not have to interrogate how you filtered bots and partial requests. IAB certified downloads covers what the guideline strips out and why two uncertified tools can disagree badly on the same feed.
Beyond the download count, Blubrry reports retention as complete against partial plays, geolocation, the apps and devices listeners use, episode comparison, an estimated audience split between listeners and subscribers, and average daily plays. The Blubrry analytics guide walks through reading those screens.
One metric comes with a condition worth knowing before you plan around it. Impactful Plays, which counts consumption at 75% or more of an episode, is available on Advanced Hosting only. If consumption depth is the number you care about most, check which tier you need before you commit, because it is not in the free or standard measurement tier.
The prefix is the part that makes it portable
Blubrry's cross-host setup guide states that its stats work with other platforms and that you can track your show with Blubrry while remaining with your current host. That is the feature that puts it on a shortlist against tools from companies that do not host anything.
The usual caveat applies and it is not Blubrry's fault. A measurement prefix sits in front of your media URL, so your host has to allow one. Acast, Anchor, Audioboom, and RedCircle do not permit third-party analytics prefixes, so no prefix-based tool works on those feeds regardless of which one you pick. Confirm your host first, then install, then verify that a current episode is reporting.
Pricing starts at a free tier with a $5 per month standard option, which puts certified measurement within reach of a show earning nothing yet. Blubrry statistics review covers where the tiers stop being enough.
What a Backtracks user is actually missing
This is where the straight swap breaks down.
Backtracks described itself as privacy-focused technology for audio publishers and advertisers to analyse audiences and improve the listener experience. The operative words are publishers and advertisers. Backtracks was bought by organisations with multiple shows, an advertising business, and staff whose job was producing reports for other people.
Blubrry replaces the measurement half of that. It does not replace an advertiser-facing reporting system, cross-show rollups built for an ad sales team, or whatever internal integrations were pulling from Backtracks.
So list what the Backtracks output was feeding before you shop. If the answer is a monthly download figure and a geographic split, Blubrry at $5 a month closes it. If the answer includes campaign delivery reports that a sales team sent to clients, you are replacing two or three things and the measurement tool is the cheap one. Backtracks alternatives and Podder vs Backtracks both start from that inventory.
There is no data to bring across
Backtracks does not export, so nothing migrates. Your new series starts on the day you install the prefix.
Treat that as a labelling job rather than something to hide. Record the install date, keep any surviving Backtracks figures as a separate labelled series, and do not join the two into a single line on a chart. A media buyer who spots an unexplained measurement change in a trend line has a reason to doubt every other number on the page, and a one-line note prevents that entirely. How to measure podcast downloads covers how to write that note so it survives scrutiny.
Who should pick what
If you are an independent podcaster who lost Backtracks or never had it, Blubrry is a reasonable default. Certified measurement at $5 a month, portable across hosts, is hard to argue with as a baseline.
If you need consumption depth specifically, price the Advanced Hosting tier before you decide, because Impactful Plays is gated there and that may change the comparison against tools that report consumption at their entry level.
If you are replacing Backtracks at organisation scale, start with the reporting inventory rather than the tool list. The measurement layer is the easy purchase. The reports your colleagues were receiving are the actual project, and nobody can scope that for you from the outside.
Certified downloads tell a sponsor how many. They do not tell you who, which is the question that sets your rate. Start tracking your show with Podder and you get the audience side alongside the delivery number.
FAQ
Is Backtracks still available?
No. Backtracks states on its own site that the platform is no longer available. Older reviews and feature comparisons describe a product you cannot sign up for, so confirm availability before any analytics tool reaches a shortlist.
Can I use Blubrry statistics without moving my podcast to Blubrry?
Yes. Blubrry states that its stats work with other platforms and that you can track your show with Blubrry while remaining with your current host. The measurement runs through a prefix, so your host has to permit third-party prefixes for the setup to work.
Does Blubrry replace everything Backtracks did?
Not for an enterprise user. Blubrry covers certified download measurement, consumption, geography, devices, and audience estimates. Backtracks sat across publisher and advertiser reporting at organisation scale, so a team replacing it usually needs a measurement tool plus whatever carried its advertiser-facing reporting.

Podder gives you audience demographics, per-episode analytics, and chart tracking. The Chartable alternative that goes deeper.
