Podcast audience statistics for 2026

Podcast audience statistics in 2026 show that podcasting is a mass medium in the United States. Edison Research at SSRS found that 58% of Americans age 12 and older consumed a podcast in the last month, while 45% did so in the last week.

The audience is also split across listening and watching. That matters when you plan a show, build a sponsor deck, or decide which analytics should guide your next episode.

Podcast audience statistics at a glance

The national reach figures below come from Edison's Infinite Dial 2026. The format and behavior figures come from The Podcast Consumer 2026.

These percentages are not interchangeable. Ever-consumed reach describes familiarity with the medium. Monthly reach describes the broad active audience. Weekly reach is the better signal of habit.

Methodology and source notes

The Infinite Dial is an annual survey, not a count of podcast downloads. Edison conducted the 2026 study in January with 2,050 people age 12 and older. About half came from the SSRS Opinion Panel, which uses probability-based recruitment through random-digit dialing and address-based sampling. Edison weighted the sample to represent the US population age 12 and older.

The Podcast Consumer 2026 combines several Edison research products. Its format figures draw on Edison Podcast Metrics. Its time-spent figures draw on Share of Ear. The report also uses The Infinite Dial and Sports Poll by SSRS.

Survey reach and server downloads answer different questions. A survey estimates how many people report consuming podcasts. A download log counts qualifying requests for audio files. If you need to reconcile those measures for your own show, start with what counts as a podcast download.

Monthly and weekly podcast reach

Edison's 2026 survey put monthly podcast consumption at 58% of Americans age 12 and older, equal to roughly 167 million people. Weekly consumption reached 45%, or roughly 130 million people. Both were all-time highs in the long-running study.

The gap between monthly and weekly reach is useful. It separates people who sample the medium from people who have made it part of their routine. A show cannot assume that national monthly reach translates into weekly episode demand.

For your own reporting, compare like with like. Track median downloads for episodes over one fixed window, then compare that figure across release cohorts. Our podcast analytics guide explains how host, platform, and prefix numbers fit together.

The core working-age audience

Among Americans age 35 to 54, 68% consumed a podcast in the last month, according to The Infinite Dial 2026. Edison calls this one of advertising's most valued demographics, but the practical point is simpler: podcast reach is not concentrated only among the youngest media users.

Do not turn that national age result into a claim about your show. Your audience may be younger, older, or narrowly concentrated around a profession. Use first-party platform demographics and listener research to prove who actually listens. Spotify podcast analytics can show demographics within Spotify, while your host or prefix covers delivery across apps.

Video is part of podcast consumption

Edison found that 57% of Americans age 12 and older had both listened to and watched a podcast. Its Podcast Consumer report also says video consumption overtook audio-only consumption in Q3 2025: 82% of weekly consumers actively watched, compared with 78% who listened audio-only.

Those format shares overlap substantially. They do not mean video owns one audience and audio owns another. They show that many people move between formats.

For producers, the result supports a dual-format decision when video serves the show. It does not require turning every recording into a studio production. Test whether clips, full video episodes, or audio alone produce repeat consumption, then invest where your own audience responds.

Podcast audiences spend heavily on audio

Daily podcast consumers spent 5 hours and 11 minutes per day with all audio sources in Edison's Q1 2026 Share of Ear data. Americans age 13 and older spent 3 hours and 57 minutes. Daily podcast consumers devoted 36% of their total audio time and 51% of their ad-supported audio time to podcasts.

That does not mean one podcast gets those hours. The measure covers all audio sources and describes people who consume podcasts daily. It does show that regular podcast users are unusually active audio consumers.

This is why completion and return behavior matter beside reach. Apple podcast analytics gives you episode-level consumption inside Apple Podcasts. Pair that depth with cross-platform download trends rather than forcing either source to answer everything.

Ad response is self-reported, not attributed revenue

The Podcast Consumer 2026 found that 76% of weekly podcast consumers said they had acted after hearing a podcast ad. Edison defined action broadly, including visiting a website, making a purchase, using a promo code, or recommending a product.

Treat this as evidence of response behavior, not a conversion rate for a campaign. It does not tell you how many people bought, how much they spent, or which ad caused the action. A sponsor still needs campaign-level tracking and a stated delivery definition. How to buy podcast advertising covers that measurement setup.

How to use these audience numbers

Use national statistics to size the medium and explain format shifts. Use your own analytics to make editorial and commercial decisions.

  • Put weekly reach beside monthly reach when describing habit.
  • Label the population, geography, field date, and whether the measure includes video.
  • Never present survey respondents as downloads or downloads as unique people.
  • Break out platform behavior when comparing listening with watching.
  • Refresh sponsor materials when the source updates, rather than carrying a year label forward.

The cleanest sponsor deck keeps industry context on one slide and show evidence on the next. National reach establishes that the channel matters. Your median delivery, consumption, audience profile, and campaign reporting establish that your show is worth buying.

FAQ

How many Americans listen to or watch podcasts each month?

Edison Research at SSRS found that 58% of Americans age 12 and older, about 167 million people, consumed a podcast in the last month in January 2026. The measure includes listening to or watching podcasts, so it reflects the medium as audiences now use it.

How many Americans consume podcasts every week?

The Infinite Dial 2026 found that 45% of Americans age 12 and older, about 130 million people, consumed a podcast in the last week. Weekly reach is the more useful national benchmark for estimating a habitual audience.

Are podcast audiences now watching as well as listening?

Yes. Edison reported that 82% of weekly podcast consumers actively watched video podcasts in its third-quarter 2025 tracking, while 78% listened to audio-only podcasts. These groups overlap, so the figures describe format behavior rather than separate audiences.
