Podcast downloads count file requests. Listens count attention. A download is recorded when a podcast app asks your host for enough of the audio file to satisfy a measurement threshold, which can happen while the phone sits in a drawer overnight. A listen is recorded when a person actually plays the episode, on a platform that can see playback.

Your host can only see the first of those, because it only sees requests hitting your audio file. Apple and Spotify can see the second, because playback happens inside their apps and never touches your server.

The thresholds each platform uses

There is no shared definition, which is the root of most of the confusion. Podnews set the current definitions side by side in August 2026, and the thresholds are far apart.

MetricWhat triggers itWhere it comes from
IAB downloadThe client requests enough of the file to play about 60 secondsIAB Podcast Measurement Technical Guidelines
Apple playA play on a unique device at any duration greater than zero secondsApple Podcasts Connect
Spotify playAn episode watched or listened to for at least 30 seconds, as of June 2026Spotify for Creators
YouTube viewCounted from the first frame the video begins to playYouTube, August 2026
YouTube engaged viewThe viewer stays past the first frame and the opening secondsYouTube, creator-facing only
AMP Accords play30 seconds of content playedIndustry consensus standard

Apple's threshold of anything above zero seconds means a listener who taps play, gets interrupted, and taps again has generated two plays. Podnews illustrates the effect with a show reporting roughly seven Apple plays for every listener, against roughly 1.7 plays per listener on Spotify. Same listening behaviour, wildly different counters.

We covered the Apple side of this in more detail in why Apple Podcasts plays is an inflated metric.

Why downloads exceed listens

Four mechanisms account for nearly all of the gap.

  1. Automatic downloads. Podcast apps fetch new episodes for followers on a schedule. The file arrives, the download counts, and the listener may never open it.
  2. Deduplication windows only go so far. The measurement standard collapses repeat requests from the same device inside a 24-hour window, so genuine buffering is handled. Requests spread across days are not.
  3. Abandonment. Someone starts the episode, decides it is not for them, and stops inside a minute. The download already counted.
  4. Platform playback is invisible to your host. When a Spotify user streams your episode, your host may see one server request or none, while Spotify records a play. The listening happened somewhere your prefix cannot watch.

The direction of the gap is consistent but its size is specific to your show. A show with a large following on an app that auto-downloads aggressively will have a wider gap than one whose audience streams on demand.

Which number to use for what

Use downloads when someone outside your show needs to compare you to another show. The IAB guidelines define them, hosts and prefix analytics count them the same way, and third parties audit them, which is what makes them a currency. A sponsor asking for your numbers is asking for downloads whether or not they say so. What counts as a podcast download walks through the counting rules in full.

Use listens when you are making a decision about the show itself. Whether to cut the cold open, whether the 40-minute format is losing people at minute 12, whether the guest episodes hold attention as well as the solo ones. Downloads cannot answer any of those, because they are all recorded before anyone has heard a word. Our notes on listen-through rate cover the metric that does.

Use unique listeners when you want the size of your actual audience rather than the size of your inventory. It is the number closest to what a podcaster means by "how many people listen to my show," and it is lower than both of the others. See unique listeners for how the deduplication works.

Reporting both without double counting

The mistake worth avoiding is addition. Adding your host's download figure to Spotify's play figure produces a number that describes nothing, because the same listener can appear in both and the two counters have different thresholds.

Report them as separate lines with the source named on each:

  • Downloads, from your host or prefix, with the measurement standard stated.
  • Platform plays, listed per platform, with each platform's threshold noted.
  • Unique listeners, from a single source that deduplicates across your feed.

A sponsor deck that does this reads as more credible than one with a single big number, because the person reading it has seen the single big number before and knows it was assembled optimistically. Our podcast analytics guide covers the reporting routine in more depth, and do Spotify streams count as podcast downloads handles the specific case where a platform has already combined the two for you.

One more wrinkle worth knowing. Edison Research's Podcast Consumer 2026 found 82 percent of weekly podcast consumers now watch video podcast content, against 78 percent listening to audio only. For a show with a video version, that means a growing share of the audience is counted at YouTube's first-frame threshold, which is the loosest one on the list. A rising total view count across audio and video can therefore coexist with flat listening.

Podder measures downloads at the prefix on IAB-friendly rules and reports unique listeners alongside them, so both lines come from one source counting one way. Start on the Analytics plan and install the prefix on your next episode.

FAQ

Are podcast listens the same as downloads?

No. A download records that a podcast app requested enough of your audio file to count under the measurement standard, which happens whether or not anyone presses play. A listen records playback. Apps that download episodes automatically overnight generate downloads with no listening attached, which is the main reason the two numbers diverge.

Which number should I give a sponsor?

Downloads, because the IAB Podcast Measurement Technical Guidelines define them and third parties audit against them, which makes them the only figure a media buyer can compare across shows. Bring your listen-through data as supporting evidence that the audience stays for the ad read, not as a replacement for the download number.

Why does Apple show more plays than Spotify?

Because the thresholds differ. Apple counts a play on a unique device at any duration above zero seconds, so a listener who taps play four times generates four plays. Spotify counts a play only after 30 seconds of watching or listening. The same audience produces a much higher Apple number without listening any more.
