Podcast statistics 2026: reach, video and ad revenue

Podcast statistics for 2026 show record US reach, a medium that now spans audio and video, and a growing advertising market. The Infinite Dial 2026 estimates 167 million monthly podcast consumers, while IAB's full-year 2025 report records $2.9 billion in US podcast ad revenue.
This page separates audience, behavior, and revenue statistics because they come from different studies and should not be blended into one story.

Methodology and definitions
Edison fielded The Infinite Dial 2026 in January among 2,050 people age 12 and older. About half of the sample came from the probability-based SSRS Opinion Panel, recruited with random-digit dialing and address-based sampling. Results were weighted to represent the US population age 12 and older.
Edison's Podcast Consumer 2026 report combines The Infinite Dial, Share of Ear, Edison Podcast Metrics, and Sports Poll by SSRS. That is why its tables can describe reach, format behavior, time spent, and advertising response without pretending one survey measured every item.
IAB's revenue report is a separate market study conducted by PwC. Its $2.9 billion podcast figure covers US advertising revenue in 2025. It is not the value of the podcast industry, creator income, or global podcast ad spend.
Podcast reach reached new highs
Edison found that 80% of Americans age 12 and older had ever consumed a podcast. That equals about 230 million people. Monthly reach was 58%, about 167 million, and weekly reach was 45%, about 130 million.
Each measure answers a different question. Ever-consumed reach shows awareness and trial. Monthly reach shows the broad active market. Weekly reach is closer to a habitual audience.
Your show should not benchmark itself against national reach. Compare episode cohorts, using one download definition and one window. What counts as a podcast download explains why a server request is not the same thing as a survey respondent or a unique listener.
Ages 35 to 54 are a major podcast audience
The Infinite Dial 2026 found monthly podcast consumption among ages 35 to 54 at 68%. That is higher than the 58% result for the full population age 12 and older.
The figure is useful to advertisers because it shows that podcast adoption is established in a core working-age group. It does not prove the age makeup of any individual show. Sellers should back category-level context with first-party demographics, listener surveys, and campaign reporting.
Use Spotify podcast analytics for demographics within Spotify. Then keep the limitation visible: Spotify cannot describe listeners using Apple Podcasts or another app.
Podcasting is a dual-format medium
Edison reported that 57% of Americans age 12 and older had both listened to and watched a podcast. Its ongoing measurement found that video podcast consumption moved ahead of audio-only consumption in Q3 2025. Among weekly consumers, 82% actively watched video and 78% listened to audio-only podcasts.
The totals overlap because one person can do both. A safe conclusion is not that video replaced audio. Instead, many consumers now choose format by show, episode, device, or moment.
For a producer, this turns format into a testable decision. Compare full-episode viewing, clips, audio consumption, and repeat behavior. Do not add views and downloads unless you can deduplicate the audience and explain both definitions.
Daily podcast consumers are heavy audio users
Edison's Q1 2026 Share of Ear data found that daily podcast consumers spent 5 hours and 11 minutes per day with all audio. Americans age 13 and older spent 3 hours and 57 minutes.
Daily podcast consumers assigned 36% of their total audio time to podcasts. They assigned 51% of their ad-supported audio time to podcasts.
These figures describe a group, not an episode. They support the idea that regular podcast consumers have strong audio habits, but they do not provide a completion benchmark for your show. Use Apple podcast analytics or the corresponding platform dashboard for episode-level consumption.
Podcast advertising revenue grew faster than the total market
IAB reported $2.9 billion in US podcast advertising revenue for 2025, up 17.6% from the prior year. Total US internet advertising revenue was $294.6 billion, up 13.9%. Podcast represented 1% of that total.
That comparison uses values in the same IAB report, which makes it cleaner than combining incompatible vendor estimates. It shows a growing ad category, not guaranteed growth for every publisher.
Revenue still follows sellable delivery, audience fit, creative, and measurement. Podcast advertising rates explains the variables behind a quote, while the cost of podcast advertising shows the budget math.
Podcast audiences report acting on ads
The Podcast Consumer 2026 found that 76% of weekly consumers said they had acted after hearing a podcast ad. Edison included visiting a website, buying, using a promo code, and recommending a product in that definition.
The wording matters for interpretation. This is self-reported action across podcast ads generally, not a 76% purchase rate and not campaign attribution. Buyers should define a measurable response before a flight starts and read brand search, codes, landing pages, and delivery together.
How to cite podcast statistics without misleading readers
A reliable citation should travel with four labels: geography, population, field period, and definition. Add the source's method when the number will influence a budget or forecast.
- Say US audience when the study covers the United States.
- Say age 12 and older when that is the sampled population.
- Distinguish listened, watched, and consumed.
- Keep survey people separate from server-side downloads.
- Describe 2025 ad revenue as a result released in 2026.
- Do not turn overlapping audio and video shares into separate audience totals.
That discipline also improves your own dashboard. Our podcast analytics guide maps the questions that host, platform, and prefix data can answer.

FAQ
How many people consume podcasts in the United States in 2026?
Edison Research at SSRS estimates that 167 million Americans age 12 and older consumed a podcast in the last month and 130 million did so in the last week. Those estimates correspond to 58% monthly reach and 45% weekly reach.
Is podcast advertising revenue growing in 2026?
The latest completed-year result is for 2025. IAB's PwC-conducted Internet Advertising Revenue Report put US podcast advertising revenue at $2.9 billion, up 17.6% year over year. That is a historical result released in April 2026, not a full-year 2026 forecast.
Does podcast consumption include video now?
Edison's 2026 survey asks about consuming podcasts and reports listening and watching behavior. It found that 57% of Americans age 12 and older had both listened to and watched a podcast, so current reach should not be described as audio-only.
