Podtrac vs Podsights: two different questions

Podtrac vs Podsights looks like a comparison. It is really a division of labour. Podtrac measures how many people downloaded your episodes and publishes the industry rankings built on that data. Podsights measured whether a podcast ad produced a result on the advertiser's website. One is a publisher tool. The other is an advertiser tool, and a show selling sponsorship usually wants both answers.
There is a status difference too. Podtrac is active. Podsights is not a product you can sign up for, because Spotify's documentation states that Podsights is now Spotify Ad Analytics. Everything below about the Podsights side describes that successor.
| Podtrac | Podsights, now Spotify Ad Analytics | |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Active | Renamed, active as Spotify Ad Analytics |
| Question it answers | How many downloads did the episode get | Did the ad produce a conversion |
| Measurement point | Prefix on your feed | Pixel on the advertiser's site |
| Independent certification | IAB Tech Lab Verified Seal, Guideline 2.0 | Not a download measurement service |
| Industry rankings | Publishes publisher, network, and show rankings | None |
| Cost | Publisher plans and pricing published | No cost, per Spotify |
| Geographic scope | Measurement is feed-based | Ten markets |
What Podtrac is for
Podtrac counts your audience and gives you something you can show a buyer.
The measurement runs through a prefix on your feed, producing multi-channel metrics across the apps your listeners use. The part that matters commercially is the certification. Podtrac displays an IAB Tech Lab Verified Seal for compliance with IAB Podcast Measurement Technical Guideline Version 2.0. That seal is the reason a media buyer takes the number at face value instead of asking how you counted. IAB certified downloads explains what the guideline filters out and why two uncertified tools can disagree by a wide margin.
The rankings are the second thing. Podtrac publishes Top Publisher and Network Rankings, Top Podcasts Rankings, and Historical Rankings with weekly trend updates. For a network pitching an agency, being a ranked publisher is a credential rather than a metric, and no analytics tool you are comparing Podtrac against bundles one. The Podtrac review covers who that is worth it for.
What the Podsights job became
Spotify Ad Analytics is the continuation. The mechanism is unchanged from what Podsights built.
A pixel sits on the advertiser's website and connects conversions back to audio campaigns. Spotify states it tracks conversions from audio campaigns wherever you are buying, on and off Spotify, so the measurement is not restricted to inventory bought through Spotify. Brand measurement runs separately, through Spotify Brand Lift, for ad recall, awareness, and consideration.
Spotify describes the service as available to brands, agencies, and publishers worldwide, operating in ten markets: Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, the UK, and the US. Spotify states there is no cost. Publishers can activate attribution with the Spotify Pixel across an unlimited number of campaigns and impressions, and opt their shows into Advisor so advertisers can find them.
For a publisher, that is a free way to offer a sponsor conversion evidence. Podcast attribution explained covers how to read what comes back, and the Podsights review covers why the old brand name still appears on shortlists.
Why you cannot substitute one for the other
A download and a conversion are different events measured at different points by different parties, and neither number can be derived from the other.
Podtrac sees a request for your media file. It cannot see what happened on the advertiser's website afterwards, because it has no presence there. Spotify Ad Analytics sees activity on the advertiser's site. It cannot tell you your total audience, because it only observes people who converted and the campaign impressions it was given.
This produces a specific failure in sponsor reporting: using a conversion count as though it were an audience measure, or a download count as though it proved performance. A campaign can deliver 50,000 downloads and 12 conversions without either figure being wrong. Report them side by side with their sources named. How to measure podcast downloads covers the download side of that discipline.
Who should run what
If you are an independent podcaster who does not sell advertising yet, neither of these is your first purchase. You need a prefix that counts downloads reliably. The certification and the rankings matter later.
If you are a publisher or network selling to agencies, Podtrac earns its place. The certified number and the ranking both reduce friction in a buying conversation, which is the actual product.
If you sell sponsorship and a brand asks whether their spend worked, activate the Spotify Pixel through Spotify Ad Analytics. It costs nothing. Declining to offer attribution when the free option exists is a weak position in a renewal conversation.
If you are the advertiser, Spotify Ad Analytics is the direct answer. Podtrac alternatives and Podtrac vs OP3 cover the publisher-side options if the certification or the cost does not fit.
The common ground is that both tools only report. Neither tells you who your listeners are or why one episode held attention and the next did not. Start tracking your show with Podder and you get the audience picture that sits underneath both of those numbers.
FAQ
Is Podsights still a product?
Not under that name. Spotify's own documentation states that Podsights is now Spotify Ad Analytics, and the podsights.com domain no longer resolves. The attribution work continues inside Spotify Ad Analytics, which Spotify describes as a free service.
Does Podtrac do ad attribution?
Podtrac's core job is publisher-side measurement and industry rankings rather than site-side conversion attribution. If a sponsor wants to know how many people visited their site after hearing the ad, that is a pixel question, which is what Spotify Ad Analytics handles.
Can I use Podtrac and Spotify Ad Analytics together?
Yes, and most shows selling advertising should. Podtrac gives you the certified download series you price against, and Spotify Ad Analytics gives the sponsor conversion evidence. Keep them as separate labelled figures, because a download and a conversion count different events.
See who's actually listening.
Podder gives you audience demographics, per-episode analytics, and chart tracking. The Chartable alternative that goes deeper.
