What is Value4Value podcasting? It is a feed-based way for listeners to send optional payments through compatible podcast apps. The podcast declares a payment layer and method, then lists the recipients and their shares. It does not create a paywall or promise revenue.

What is Value4Value podcasting in an RSS feed?

Value4Value, often shortened to V4V, is implemented with the Podcast Namespace <podcast:value> element. The Value specification says this element identifies the cryptocurrency or payment layer, the transport method, and an optional suggested amount.

The block may appear at the channel level, where it applies to the podcast, or inside an episode item. An item-level block overrides the channel-level settings for that episode. That makes episode-specific arrangements possible, such as adding a guest as a recipient.

This metadata travels inside the same feed structure covered in our podcast RSS feed glossary. A compatible app reads the value block and handles the payment experience. An app that does not support the tags may ignore them.

Value blocks and recipient splits

A value block has a parent element and one or more <podcast:valueRecipient> children. They answer different questions:

Feed elementWhat it declares
`<podcast:value>`Payment layer, transport method, and optional suggested amount
`<podcast:valueRecipient>`Recipient type, receiving address, and required split shares
Channel-level blockDefault arrangement for the show
Item-level blockEpisode-specific override

The valueRecipient specification defines type, address, and split as required attributes. name is recommended. Optional fields can carry routing data or mark a recipient as a fee.

A split is a number of shares, not a fixed percentage written into the feed. If two recipients have equal shares, they receive equal portions of that payment. When the share counts differ, the app calculates each portion against the total number of shares. Review the complete Value block companion specification before configuring production payments because fee handling and custom routing affect the result.

What the listener controls

The companion specification describes a play-to-pay model. A compatible app can send payments while someone listens, and it can also support one-time listener-initiated payments. The suggested amount remains a suggestion. The listener can change it, including setting it to zero.

Value4Value leaves access open while publishing payment instructions in RSS metadata. A paid subscription commonly controls access or benefits through an account and billing relationship. Our podcast monetization guide covers other revenue models that may sit beside it.

V4V also differs from ordinary catalog metadata. Podcast Index can expose Value information to applications, but the feed still declares the payment arrangement and the compatible app still executes the listener-facing flow.

How to configure and test Value4Value

Start with the channel-level arrangement. Record each recipient's name, address type, exact address, split shares, and whether any entry represents a fee. Ask every recipient to confirm the destination independently before the feed changes.

Then test the implementation in order:

  1. Validate that the feed contains the expected namespace declaration and value block.
  2. Confirm that each recipient address and split matches your approved ledger.
  3. Open the show in a compatible app and check that it recognizes the payment information.
  4. Send a small test payment through the same method listeners will use.
  5. Verify receipt with every destination rather than relying on the sender screen alone.

Repeat the test after changing hosts, recipient addresses, methods, or splits. If you use an episode-level override, inspect both that episode and a normal episode to confirm the override stays scoped correctly.

What Value4Value can and cannot show

A valid value block proves that a feed declares payment instructions. It does not prove that every directory supports them, that a listener completed a payment, or that each recipient received the intended amount. Keep feed validation, wallet or payment records, and accounting records as separate evidence.

The same boundary applies to audience reporting. Payment activity can show financial support from participating listeners, while podcast analytics measures delivery and audience signals under its own definitions. Do not treat payer count as total audience size or a value-enabled feed as proof of monetization.

FAQ

What is Value4Value podcasting?

Value4Value podcasting uses feed metadata to tell compatible apps which payment method to use and how to divide optional listener payments among declared recipients.

Does Value4Value put a podcast behind a paywall?

No. Under the Podcast Namespace specification, a listener can choose another amount or zero, and an app can ignore the value block when the listener does not pay.

Can a guest receive a share from one episode?

Yes. An item-level value block can override the channel-level block for that episode, which allows a different recipient list or split.
