The IAB Australia audio play definition now gives buyers and publishers a plain threshold: a user presses play on content and listens for more than one second. The new Audio Buyer's Guide Glossary 2026 gives Session Start the same wording. It does not make a play equivalent to a podcast download or an ad impression.
IAB Australia published the glossary on October 15, 2026 as a reference for planning, buying, and measuring digital audio. For networks, the practical job is to retain the label and counting rule attached to each number before putting reports side by side.
The IAB Australia audio play definition uses one second
In the official glossary PDF, Play means that a user presses play and listens for more than one second. Session Start points back to the same action and threshold.
That definition describes user-initiated playback under this Australian buyer glossary. It does not specify how separate apps should identify the same person, deduplicate a listener across devices, or combine platform reports. A network should therefore report the source beside the metric, such as "plays reported by Platform A," rather than presenting plays from several systems as one standardized audience count.
This distinction also affects trend reviews. If one dashboard reports plays and another reports downloads, a change between them may reflect different counting rules rather than a real audience gain or loss. Podcast downloads versus listens explains why delivery and playback belong in separate columns.
A play is not a podcast download
The glossary defines Download as a unique file request, including complete and partial progressive downloads, after removing spiders and bots. Its stated threshold also requires at least one minute of podcast content downloaded by a unique IP address and user agent within a 24-hour period. The glossary points readers to the IAB Tech Lab Podcast Measurement Technical Guidelines for that measurement framework.
A play begins with a user action and more than one second of listening. A download comes from filtered file delivery. Neither label proves the other event occurred under the other metric's rule.
That is why a network should not rename an app's play count as "IAB downloads" in a sponsor report. Use the dashboard's actual label, state the source, and keep the counting window visible. Our guide to what counts as a podcast download covers the server-side measurement layer, while IAB-certified podcast downloads explains what certification does and does not establish.
Ad delivery and ad playback stay separate too
The glossary also separates three advertising terms that can look similar in a media plan:
| Metric | What the IAB Australia glossary says it represents | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Audible Ad Impression | An audio ad impression excluding ads audible for less than two continuous seconds | Completion, recall, or conversion |
| Delivered Ad Impression (Podcast) | Server-log delivery when all ad bytes were sent or the podcast bytes containing the ad were downloaded | That a person heard the ad |
| Client Confirmed Ad Play | Playback confirmed by a tracking signal from the listening app or device, with quartile reporting | A cross-platform unique listener |
The two-second audible threshold can be met by any part of the ad. It should not be converted into a completion claim. Likewise, a delivered impression is a server-side event, while a client-confirmed play depends on a signal from the app or device.
These definitions give buyers a cleaner set of questions. Ask whether a campaign report counts delivery, audible exposure, or client-confirmed playback. Then ask which platform supplied the event and which window or filtering rule was applied. A CPM denominator should retain the exact impression definition used in the contract.
What networks should change in reports and media kits
Audit every audience and advertising table for four fields: metric name, source, counting rule, and reporting window. Keep those fields beside the value, not in a footnote that disappears when a slide is copied.
A defensible label might read "Platform-reported plays, more than one second" or "host-reported podcast downloads under the provider's stated method." For ads, specify delivered impression, audible ad impression, or client-confirmed ad play rather than shortening all three to "impressions."
The 2026 glossary gives Australian digital-audio buyers shared terminology. It does not replace the IAB Tech Lab technical standard, reconcile every platform's private analytics, or turn playback and delivery into interchangeable measures. Preserve those boundaries when you compare a platform dashboard with host or prefix analytics.
