Overcast podcast statistics and the number it sends you

Overcast podcast statistics start with one number the app sends you directly and one number a host can measure. Overcast puts your subscriber count into the user agent of its feed crawler, which is the only figure it publishes about your show. Transistor's hosting data puts Overcast at 2.908% of podcast downloads as of September 2026, the largest share of any named third-party app in that dataset.

The one statistic Overcast actually hands you
Most listening apps give podcasters nothing and say nothing about it. Overcast gives podcasters one number and explains exactly where to find it.
Six crawler servers, crawl1 through crawl6.overcast.fm, fetch your RSS feed on a schedule and respect standard HTTP caching headers. The user agent on those requests carries your Overcast subscriber count as a plain number, plus a feed ID. Nothing else travels with it.
That is a real subscriber count from a real app, and it is more than Apple or Spotify give you at the feed level. The catch is access. Your host has to either surface the figure or let you read raw access logs, and many hosts parse the user agent for the app name and throw the rest away. Ask your host whether it exposes the Overcast subscriber value before assuming you cannot get it.
Overcast's separate playback user agents, including Overcast/3.0 for iOS and an Apple Watch variant, are what appear in your download reporting. Those tell you the app, not the subscriber count.
What Overcast refuses to publish, and why
The podcaster page states the policy in one line: to protect privacy, no other statistics, analytics or usage data are provided. That covers listening time, completion rates, ad-skip behaviour, geography and everything else an app could collect.
This is a deliberate product position rather than a technical limitation. Overcast parses open RSS feeds and downloads episodes directly from your server to the listener, so the app is not holding a copy of your audio or sitting between you and your audience the way a platform-hosted catalogue does.
The practical result is that Overcast listening reaches you as ordinary downloads from your own server, countable under the IAB podcast measurement guidelines like any other client. You get the request, the app name and the timing. You do not get consumption.
For discovery, Overcast leans on Apple. Podcasters submit to Apple Podcasts and typically appear in Overcast search within one to two days, and feeds not known to Apple Podcasts are excluded from search and recommendations, though listeners can still subscribe by direct feed URL. Overcast also uses Apple's human-reviewed directory as its moderation filter.
Why a solo iPhone app holds the largest third-party share
Overcast runs on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, and nowhere else. One developer, Marco Arment, maintains it, with no outside company or investors behind it. It has been running for twelve years.
Overcast competes only inside the Apple ecosystem, which is where the largest single slice of podcast downloads already sits, and it competes on playback quality rather than catalogue. Smart Speed shortens silences in talk shows, and Voice Boost normalises volume so every show plays at the same level.
Most features are free, funded by small visual ads that promote podcasts, with an annual subscription adding extra features and the option to hide those ads. The app's revenue therefore comes from listeners and podcast promotion rather than from data.
Arment released a full rewrite on July 16, 2024, the tenth anniversary of version 1.0, after roughly eighteen months rebuilding the app in Swift, SwiftUI and modern Swift concurrency. Development since has continued at a faster pace, including on-demand transcription, which he runs on a rack of 48 Mac minis as discussed on Mac Power Users episode 850 in May 2026.
Reading your own Overcast share correctly
Transistor's 2.908% describes requests across Transistor-hosted shows in September 2026. It is one host's aggregate, skewed toward independent and small-network podcasts, and it is not a global market share.
Your own figure will move with your audience's device mix more than with anything you do editorially. A show with a US and UK technology audience commonly sees Overcast well above the platform average. A show with a large Android or Latin American audience will see it near zero, because the app does not exist on those devices.
Compare Overcast to your other app shares rather than to the industry average. The comparison that matters is whether Overcast is 1% or 15% of your downloads, which determines whether its subscriber count is a useful signal or a rounding error. Pocket Casts podcast statistics covers the cross-platform equivalent, and Apple Podcasts podcast statistics covers the surface Overcast draws its listeners from.
Treat the subscriber count as a trend, not a total. It tells you how many Overcast users have your feed saved, which is a different quantity from how many listen, and the same distinction runs through what counts as a podcast download. A rising Overcast subscriber count alongside flat Overcast downloads means people are subscribing and not playing.
For the discovery side of the app, how to rank on Overcast charts covers what its recommendation surfaces respond to, which is a separate question from what it reports.

FAQ
How many people use Overcast?
Overcast has never published a user count. The closest measurable figure is download share, and Transistor's September 2026 hosting data puts Overcast at 2.908% of downloads across its shows, ahead of CastBox at 1.891% and Pocket Casts at 1.678%. Your own share depends on how much of your audience is on iPhone.
Can I see my Overcast subscriber count?
Yes, if you can read your raw server logs. Overcast's feed crawler sends your subscriber count and a feed ID in its user agent string when it fetches your RSS feed from crawl1 through crawl6.overcast.fm. Some hosts surface that number; others discard it. Overcast provides nothing else.
Does Overcast give podcasters analytics?
No, and that is a stated policy rather than a gap. Overcast's podcaster page says that to protect privacy, no other statistics, analytics or usage data are provided beyond the subscriber count in the crawler user agent. Download-side measurement has to come from your host or a prefix.
